Slab City, Calif. - January 7, 2012

Several weeks ago, one of my very good friends Kirstina Sangsahachart invited me to Slab City, Calif., an area that has attracted a lot of recent attention from the media. The town is located just about 80 miles southeast of Palm Springs, Calif.

Slab City was used as a marine training facility back in the 1940s. The area has now attracted mostly seasonal campers who move out here and leave by the time temperatures rise to extremely hot dry summers that are well over 130 degrees.

I am so thankful that Kirstina and I had the opportunity to work on something together. Kirstina and I linked up with her friends who were freelancers for Time magazine - they introduced us to John Holdson who was our main access to members of the Slab City community.

John took us throughout the day to meet Slab City residents. I think the photos that you will see will only give you a small taste of the place and of its people.

I hope you enjoy my photos....
